Duck Duck Goose

I know the difference, really I do! This masked beauty is a DUCK! She would not look at me before, and from the back end I just thought she was a goose. This is the one in the hollowed stump.

This defensive dame is a GOOSE! She has at least 13 eggs and she is hardly big enough to keep them covered.

And this is a watchman, a warrior. He stays near to chase away anything or anybody that gets too close to his "lady." All she has to do is sound a distress call and he comes running with head lowered, ready to attack!

In Mobile we had two cats that adopted us, and each of them had a littler of kittens while we were there. Here we have a duck and a goose, each ready to be mothers. Humm. Are we starting a trend?

This reminds me of a little killdeer and her protector at Aux Arc Park which is a Corps of Engineers park at Ozark, AR. When we were there a couple of years ago, we were out walking and we heard a bird began to cry with a penetrating sound...like a backup beeper. We began to look in the trees around us and it got louder and louder as we walked. Suddenly I looked down, and there it was RIGHT at my feet. And about a foot or so away was her nest and eggs...right beside the pavement (I have pictures). She was so distressed. When I went back the next day to take pictures, she got all distressed again...and here came her mate...first trying to distract me...then, when that didn't work, he tried to run me off. Quite an exciting experience !!

I love watching killdeer birds. They do get very emotional don't they? I love to see them acting wounded while they try to lead you away from their nest. There are about 5 of them that hang out here at EZ DAZE. I hope to get a good photo of them soon.
